The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Exam: What To Expect

According to leafwingcenter.org, it is commonly believed that applied behavior analysis is only used for those with autism spectrum disorder. While it has proven to be helpful for many individuals with autism spectrum disorder, it can also be a help to those with other problems. These include people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, or panic disorder.

Autism Spectrum Disorder

According to cdc.gov, autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disability. It causes trouble with behavior, communication, and social interaction. Those with autism often have a different way of seeing the world, or a different way of thinking about what they see. They often have trouble learning basic social skills that seem intuitive to many others. They may also have delayed communication about 40% of those with autism are nonverbal. Children with autism often have self-harmful behaviors, such as biting or scratching. There are different levels of intellectual disability or ability among those with ASD. Some autistic individuals need more help with their daily lives than others.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Panic Disorder

All of these disorders can be improved upon through the use of applied behavior analysis.

Pass The Rbt Competency Assessment With A Bcba

The BACB requires that the RBT applicant pass an assessment demonstrating competency in each of the areas listed on the task list. The initial competency assessment, according to the BACB website, includes 20 assessment items and must be completed by a BCBA. You must demonstrate understanding of each of the skills either through interview, role-play, or with a client.

The BACB requires that at least 3 skills be demonstrated with a client. The client does not need to be a paying client but must be someone for whom behavior analytic services are appropriate. This requirement may make it difficult to complete the competency assessment outside of a work environment however, many BCBAs are willing to help RBT candidates meet this requirement, for a fee.

As with the RBT coursework, many employers offer a BCBA supervisor to complete the assessment. Many of the same questions above apply here. Make sure you know what your employer expects of you if they complete this assessment for you. Dont assume that this comes without strings.

When youre ready to complete the competency assessment, practice! Make sure you understand the terminology. This will make the assessment faster and easier to complete while removing much of the stress.

How Long Does It Take To Study For The Rbt Exam

In reality, your studies should begin the moment you start your 40-hour training program. This is not only a requirement for taking the RBT test, its a great chance to gain a lot of valuable experience. Take notes and ask questions during this training period.

With that said, you should allow one to two months of preparation before taking the RBT test. This time period includes your 40 hours of live training too. That will give you approximately a week to dedicate to each topic and also provides you with a few days of downtime before the exam.

Applying For Registered Behavior Technician Certification Online Is A Slam Dunk

Like everything else these days, RBT applications are filed online. Youll need to create an account on the BACB website, which is completely free of charge. The RBT certification application will cost you $50.

Once your account is created, you can begin your RBT application by uploading the documents required to prove your eligibility. Those will be:

  • Certificate of completion for the 40-hour RBT training
  • Completed RBT Initial Competency Assessment form
  • Copy of your transcript or diploma verifying your education

Youll also need to identify a person who will serve as your RBT Requirements Coordinator or RBT Supervisor. Thats the person who will vouch for your age and that you cleared the background check. Thats also the person who will handle your supervision, or appoint someone to do it.

Your RBT Requirements Coordinator will almost always be the BCBA you end up going to work for, or the person who performed your Initial Competency Assessment. Most employers are familiar with this process and its often part of getting hired as an RBT.

RBT certification is a paraprofessional certification offered by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board that measures behavior technician skills against a standard task list. Maintaining The Rbt Certification

You typically also take and pass the Renewal Competency Assessment every year in order to keep your certification active. I am a terrible nervous test taker, and as I went through it, I felt like I knew the material, and given what I saw as multiple right answers, I could confidently answer, which I learned was the best answer. How Do You Get Started With The 40 Hours Of Required Rbt Training

Generally, there are three places where you can find an ABA training program. Each place has pros and cons, but they can help you get the training hours your need for your certification.

1. You could ask your current employer if they have an RBT certification program.

ââ¬ï¿½Most places that deal with special education and work specifically with children and people who are on the autism spectrum will often provide RBT programs to help get their employees certified. Some examples of these jobs include:

  • Clinical psychology offices that work with people with autism
  • Schools or daycare centers that deal with special needs children, like with autism

Other job locations might have a training program. You will just need to speak with your boss to find out.

2. Many local colleges and universities will provide training for different ABA therapy techniques, like RBT training.

ââ¬ï¿½You need to ensure the college you find has been approved by the Association of Behavior Analysts International , and they should meet all accreditations for providing national degree standards.

3. There are training companies for RBT certification.

ââ¬ï¿½If you choose to go through a training program, they will help to place you in a place where you can work directly with an ABA-certified therapist.

How To Find A Bcba Supervisor For Your Competency Assessment

If you decide to pursue certification without the help of your employer, you must also find a BCBA supervisor. While this might feel daunting, the BACB makes it easy. They offer a search function on their website that allows you to easily find BCBAs in your area who offer supervision. If there are no BCBAs in your area or if you prefer completing supervision online, you can find BCBAs across the country willing to provide supervision.

If you know a BCBA, you can search by name to get the contact information. Clicking on the arrow to the left of the BCBAs name will provide you more details. In this expanded format, you can see if the certificant is able to offer supervision. There are options for BCaBA and BCBA or BCaBA trainees however, the BACB does not list willingness to work with RBT candidates. You will have to reach out individually to the certificant to inquire about this specifically. In order to provide supervision, a BCBA must complete an 8 hour supervision course and collect supervision CEUs each certification cycle.

When you click on the name of the BCBA, you see an option that allows you to contact the BCBA via an email form. Most BCBAs respond quickly to inquiries. If they are not able to provide you with supervision, they many will happily assist you in finding the supervision you need.
