Birth & Death Records

Official records of births and deaths occurring within the City limits of Wayne are on file in the City Clerk’s Office. Certified copies of birth records are available to those so entitled by Michigan statute along with picture ID at a fee of $20 and $5 for each additional copy of the same record. Death records are open to the public fees for certified copies of death records are the same as for birth records. The only forms of payment are cash or money orders.

To Obtain A Copy Of A Death Record By Mail
- If you are unable to come in person to get a copy of the Death certificate, you may send in a written request. Please include the following information on your request: Name of deceased and date of death. You may download the request form online .

Wayne County Clerk Obtains City Of Detroit Birth And Death Records

– In an effort to better serve the public, Wayne County Clerk Cathy M. Garrett will begin issuing Detroit birth and death certificates on JANUARY 27, 2014.
The temporary delay in service is due to the information and technology transition.
Through this partnership with the City of Detroit, Wayne County residents will greatly benefit from this newly added convenience.
- Detroit birth and death records can be obtained at 640 Temple Street – Suite 625 Detroit, MI 48201 with SAME-DAY SERVICE BEGINNING ON JANUARY 27, 2014.
- Hours of operation will be Monday – Friday, 8 am – 3 pm.
- Parking for patrons is absolutely free.
- Individuals can send City of Detroit mail requests to The Office of the Wayne County Clerk – City of Detroit Vitals 640 Temple Street – Suite 625 Detroit, MI 48201.
- Please note that all mail requests must be sent in letter form and include the signature, return address and phone number of the individual requesting a record.

OUR MISSION
To provide and promote efficient, timely, world class services at a fair cost to the residents of Wayne County, as well as other members of the public requiring our services. To carry out the statutory obligations of administering all Federal, State and County elections conducted in Wayne County. The Wayne County Clerk, among many other constitutional and statutorily mandated functions, serves as the Clerk of the Third Judicial Circuit Court and as keeper of the records for Wayne County.
The County Clerk is clerk of the Circuit Court and clerk of the following boards: the Board of Commissioners, Board of County Canvassers, Concealed Weapon Licensing Board, and County Plat Board. She serves as Secretary to the Board of Election Commissioners and is also a statutory member of the Wayne County Apportionment Commission. Other functions of the Clerk are primarily recordkeeping in nature. For example, she must keep transcripts of births and deaths, issue marriage licenses, record and index all business assumed names, co-partnership certificates, notary public appointments, and discharge of military personnel.
