The technology industry has relied on certifications to demonstrate knowledge for decades. I still remember the first cert I ever earned: “Distributed Applications with Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0” when I was pursuing my MCSD back in the 90’s. And now, there are certifications available for every operating platform, programming language, methodology, and framework under the sun.

This year, I’ve made the decision to let all of my certs expire. Not because I don’t think they provide any value at all – they do – but that they have come to serve more as a gatekeeper to entering and prospering in the profession than any kind of proof of knowledge or proficiency in a particular skill.

For one recent certification I earned – and I’m not going to name and shame any particular organization here, as that’s not the point – the process looked something like this:

Buy test prep book: $75

Join national organization: $125

Join regional organization : $50

Pay test fee: $700

I also chose not to purchase any of the countless “boot camp” services offered, at a cost of several hundred dollars.

Doing the math here, that’s $1,000 for the initial cert, several hundred more dollars per year to maintain it, and that’s just for a single certification. Multiply that by any of the number of certs a person may choose to maintain, and this represents a several thousand dollar per year investment.
