Individuals will not have a defined expiration date until they have employment. Individuals employed in a Washington state school district will have the validity calculated based on the experience information submitted by the school district on their annual personnel report to OSPI.
- Individuals employed by a Washington school district must have their residency certificate reissued with a defined expiration date
- Individuals employed in nonpublic school settings may participate in completing professional teacher certificate requirements and have their certificate reissued with a defined expiration date. It is up to the individual or their employer to determine if they wish to have their certificate reissued with a defined expiration date
When a certificate is reissued, it will be valid for five years.
I’m Interested In Substitute Teaching But I Don’t Have An Education Background Is There Any Way I Can Substitute Teach
A regular substitute teaching certificate requires the same preparation as a regular teaching certificate: a bachelor’s degree and a state-approved training program. However, we do offer an emergency substitute certificate, which does not require a teacher training program. That certificate must be requested by an employing school district. How To Become A Teacher In Louisiana
All teachers in Louisiana are required to hold a bachelors degree, complete a Louisiana teacher preparation program, and pass the appropriate Praxis exams. For traditional route educators attending a Louisiana-based program, the required teacher preparation which includes 180 hours of field experience and a full year of classroom residency will be included in the bachelors degree curriculum.
Those who have already earned a bachelors degree but did not complete teacher preparation may be eligible for alternative teacher certification in Louisiana.
Louisiana uses a tiered licensing structure. Those who meet the basic requirements above are eligible for a Level 1 Professional Certificate. Teachers can advance to the Level 2 Professional Certificate by completing the Louisiana Teacher Assistance and Assessment Program and successfully teaching for three years. Educators can advance to the highest certificate, the Level 3 Professional Certificate, by earning a masters degree and teaching for at least five years.

If you hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in nursing and hold a valid registered nurse license from the Washington State Department of Health, you may complete the application for an Initial Educational Staff Associate school nurse certificate. There may be additional requirements but a temporary permit may be issued based on appropriate degree and license until additional requirements are met. How Do I Know If My Program Is State
If you completed a program through an institution outside of Washington State, you must check with the institution to be sure their program is/was state-approved at the time you completed the program. Washington accepts all other states’ programs having state approval for purposes of educational certification or licensure for serving in the role in K-12 schools.
Alternative Route Program Pathway Candidate Profile:

- Bachelor’s degree, with a major in the license subject
- Career changer, entering teaching
- Educator seeking an additional license in a shortage area
- Seeking licensure in a shortage area in Wisconsin
- mathematics, science, career and technical education subjects, business education, world languages, special education, bilingual/bicultural and ESL also regional shortages
For subject-specific licensure, the candidate must have already completed a major in the subject area of the license they are seeking. Wisconsin Alternative Route programs prepare candidates with teaching coursework for Wisconsin licenses in shortage areas. These programs are for licensure only and do not lead to a degree.

In general, all schools will require prospective teachers to have, at minimum, a bachelors degree. This degree might be in education or in the content area that they will be teaching. What Else Should I Consider In Selecting A Program
Educators who seek out or complete preparation at institutions or universities outside the state of Michigan must meet the requirements of that state. The MDE does not have the authority to approve out-of-state educator preparation programs prior to completion. Upon completion of the preparation program and eligibility for the out-of-state certificate or license, educators may seek an evaluation under the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification reciprocal agreement held between states.
Application for initial certification based upon an in-state preparation program or evaluation of an out-of-state preparation program must be submitted using the Michigan Online Educator Certification System.
