This series of training modules focuses on understanding the challenges practitioners, and other community members who provide health services, may face when working with rural and Appalachian residents. In May 2022, Ohio University Chillicothe launched a Community Health Worker training program in collaboration with Ohio University’s Integrated Services for Behavioral Health, Ohio Alliance for Population Health, and the Voinovich School for Leadership. Join us for the next co-hort August 22 at the Chillicothe or Zanesville campus.

“Community health workers build health knowledge and self-sufficiency through outreach, community education, informal counseling, social support and advocacy.” .

This training will provide 100 hours of classroom content and 130 hours of hands-on clinical content to participants, at no cost to participants. It is a hybrid of online classes and 3 in-person sessions which will be held at the Ohio University Chillicothe campus. Once successfully completed, participants will be eligible for certification through the Ohio Board of Nursing.

Other Websites Offering Continuing Education

Below are websites that provide continuing education directly in multiple different facilitation ways. Some trainings could be face to face, webinars, or independent studies. Also, be aware that some courses do have a cost associated with taking the course. Check with your employer to see if they have a continuing education reimbursement policy before paying out of pocket for training.

Greater Ohio Workforce Board Training

Support for Community Health Workers

The Alliance is providing customized training to staff at OhioMeansJobs centers in 43 counties. Training topics are identified by the Greater Ohio Workforce Board , and seminar-style courses are developed and facilitated by Alliance staff and contracted experts. Each seminar is 1.5 hours in duration and includes approximately 50-60 minutes of didactic instruction and 30-40 minutes of small group discussion and role play. In order to foster group discussion, attendance is limited to 32 participants per session, and each session has been offered ten times. Continuing education units for each seminar were provided for all participating social workers who completed both the seminar and related evaluation. Seminar topics include:

  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Conflict Management and Dispute Resolution
  • Coaching and Mentoring
  • Matching Employment Strategies to Individuals Circumstances

Nc Community Health Worker Initiative And Core Competency Training

CHWs should possess a set of core skills to effectively meet the demands of their positions. CHWs in NC should be able to demonstrate each of the nine competencies.   • Financial And Linguistic Barriers To Certification

    President Joe Biden announced his support for the CHW workforce and strategy to increase the CHW workforce by 150,000 during his presidential campaign. The administration also noted the often-humble backgrounds that many CHWs come from CHWs are frequently economically vulnerable and often come from . CHWs are also a racially diverse workgroup with 65 percent of the workforce being Black or Latinx and 10 percent of the workforce being Native American. More specifically, the CHW workforce is largely composed of women of color. This racial diversity also brings linguistic diversity, which may prove to be a barrier in seeking CHW certification.

    Community Health Worker Training Program

    Community Health Workers are trusted individuals who improve health within their own communities. They provide health services, increase access to care, and advocate for individuals and populations by serving as a voice among healthcare providers. CHWs foster communities to achieve health, equity, and social justice. They are able to represent their community members and describe the health, social, economic, political, and cultural issues that they face with authenticity and lived experience. This unique model not only builds trust with the people served, but also improves health outcomes. In Appalachian counties where access to healthcare services is limited and social determinants of health create additional barriers, CHWs are bridging the gap between community members and the services they need to live healthy lives.

    CHWs complete 100 hours of didactic classroom content that is competency-based and designed for adult learners. Participants are then placed in a community setting to fulfill 130 hours in a field practicum. Participants earn eligibility for certification through the Ohio Board of Nursing. In 2020, the training curriculum was converted from an in-person format to an online hybrid format in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, expanding the reach and flexibility of the program.

    Interested In Offering The Chw Standardized Core Competency Training

    Below are the requirements for NC Community Colleges to receive recognition as an approved certified NC Standardized Core Competency Training institution for Community Health WorkersNote: Only NC Community Colleges can offer and receive state recognition after completion of the required CHW SCCT instructor training and acknowledging the statements below.Other organizations providing CHW training are eligible for CEU offerings and recognition pending approval by the NC CHW Credentialing and Accreditation Advisory Board.

    • The CC instructors have successfully participated in the state-sponsored Standardized Core CT Train-the-Trainer
    • The SCCT Train-the-Trainer training and its materials do not certify the college, only the certified instructor
    • Community Colleges and instructors attest to maintain the integrity of the SCCT materials for the sole use of the trained instructors and should not be shared or used to train outside of the CC setting.
    • Students that participate in an SCCT offered at the CC will be eligible for NC certification and recognition as a certified CHW. Students who receive training under a non-certified CC are NOT eligible for traditional certification. Students would have to qualify for certification and recognition to the NC CHW Credentialing and Accreditation Advisory Board by providing supportive documentation such as, but not limited to training, lived experience, written referrals, etc.

    Community Health Worker Certification Program

    Cleveland State University School of Nursing is pleased to present our Ohio Board of Nursing certified Community Health Worker program. This program is appropriate for anyone interested in an entry-level position in health care who would like to make a difference in the health of their community.

    This program is a rigorous combination of 14 full-day classroom sessions with an additional 130 service hours in the community.

    The program includes

    14 Saturday classes, 9am to 3pm on CSU Main Campus in Room 235

    CPR and Vital Signs training

    130 additional service hours

    At least 18 years of age with a High School diploma or GED certificate

    Substance Test and Background Check before program begins

    ALL Health Data documentation submitted before program begins

    Saturdays, January 28 – May 20, 2023

    9am – 3pm

    Tuition $1,950

    Deadline for registration and full payment is January 19, 2023

    Parking is not included and is $10 per day on the CSU campus

    To complete the program, participants must attend all classroom sessions , complete CPR and Vital Signs Trainings , and complete an 130 additional service hours in the community.

    After the participant has completed all the requirements of the CSU Community Health Worker Program, they will then submit their application to the Ohio Board of Nursing to become certified as a Community Health Worker in the State of Ohio.

    Students who complete this certificate program are eligible to be certified by the Ohio Board of Nursing as a Community Health Worker . The CHW will work in the community as an outreach resource assisting clients in six major areas: healthcare, community resources, communication skills, individual and community advocacy, health education, and skills and responsibilities. Practicum experiences in the community will be a major component of the certificate.

    A minimum grade of C is required in all CHWR courses and an overall certificate grade point average of 2.00. An acceptable Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation report is required. Various practicum sites for CHWR 2750 may have specific background check and drug testing requirements. CHWR 2710 , CHWR 2730 , and CHWR 2750 must be completed within a two year period .

    CHWR 2710 will count as a technical elective in the Human Services program.

    Case Manager Certification Training

    In collaboration with ProMedica and the University of Toledo, Ohio University College of Health Sciences and Professions and The Alliance have developed a five-course series to prepare prospective Case Managers for the Case Manager Certification Exam.

    Subject matter experts developed relevant content related to each aspect of case management. Each course offers continuing education and certification preparation opportunities for nurses, social workers and licensed counselors.

    A Note On State Characteristics

    Community Health Worker state certification is an official credential that demonstrates a CHW has fulfilled predetermined requirements. CHW certification is voluntary in most states. However, in select states certification is mandatory for a CHW to practice or receive Medicaid reimbursement. State certification is typically run by the state health department, and in some cases in partnership with CHW associations and/or local training providers. State certification differs from receiving a certificate of completion from a training program. For this map, only those states with an official state certification program have been counted. Additionally, because of the increased attention of state Medicaid reimbursement as a method to finance CHW services, it has been featured as a characteristic.

    What Is A Community Health Worker

    Community Health Workers are frontline public health workers who assist in improving quality of care and breaking down cultural barriers to treatment. CHWs bridge the gap between people in need of care and care providers and as members of the community they serve, they help build trust and open lines of communication.

    A CHW may go by many titles including: Community Health Representative, Community Health Advisor, Health Coach, Family Advocate, Health Educator, Liaison, Outreach Worker, Patient Navigator, Public Health Aide, Patient Care Coordinator, Promotores de Salud.

    Likewise, CHWs work in a wide variety of settings that may include hospital systems, non-profit and faith-based organizations, public and private clinics, educational systems, learning extension centers, public agencies or even serving clients within their homes.
