Public Health Nurse Licensure And Certification
How to become a public health nurse? First, you must become a registered nurse by graduating from an accredited nursing school and passing the NCLEX-RN examination. While not legally required, certification demonstrates your knowledge of and commitment to public health, and many employers strongly prefer or require it.
RN Licensure: The NCLEX-RN examination is a multiple choice examination. To be eligible for the examination, you must graduate from an accredited nursing school and apply through your local state board of nursing. The fee for the examination is $200 and there may be other fees to apply for a license, based on your state.
Certified in Public Health : The National Board of Public Health Examiners offers the CPH credential. To be eligible for the examination, you must either have a bachelors degree and five years of experience in public health or have graduated from an accredited masters or doctoral public health program. The test, which can be taken with a live proctor or at a testing center, costs $385.

Any of CSUB RN-BSN courses provide CEUs for the BRN license renewal. A student will choose the course that is completed into the BRN Breeze system and enter the name of the course, the hours , the dates and the university name. No BRN Provider Number is needed for this.

Attend An Accredited Nursing Program
Graduate with a BSN from an accredited nursing program. While you can become a nurse through either an ADN or BSN program, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree in order to earn your public health certification.
To get into a nursing program, you need to complete the required prerequisite health science courses such as anatomy and physiology, biology, nutrition, biomedical statistics, and chemistry. Requirements can vary by school however, some have a GPA requirement of 3.0 or higher for consideration.
You will also need to take and perform well on an entrance exam such as the Test of Academic Skills exam or Kaplan Nursing School Admissions test. Some universities also require letters of recommendation, CPR certification, a written career statement explaining why you want to go to nursing school, and a face-to-face interview.
Two What Do Public Health Nurses Do
Public Health Nurses are involved in the prevention, education, advocacy, activism, assessment, and evaluation of Public Health. They are involved in the prevention of disease while promoting the publics safety and well-being. They educate the public about health issues and provide support to other medical professionals.
Other duties of a public health nurse include:
- Assessing health trends to identify health risk factors specific to communities
- Assigning priorities for health-related interventions in order to provide the greatest benefit
- Advocacy with local, state and federal authorities in improving the access to health services in underserved communities
- Design and implement health education campaigns and activities for disease prevention
- Provide information on local health programs and services that are available to improve access to care
- Providing direct health care services to at-risk populations
- Tell people about locally available health care programs and services to improve access to care
- Educate and provide direct health care services to vulnerable and at-risk populations
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals
Public health nurses must be good communicators as educating the public and other health care professionals is a major part of the profession. Public health nurses have the ability to work in a variety of areas including:

Public Health Nurse Certification
Public health nursing is a unique and challenging specialty. Nurses With A Bsn Degree From Another University
Nurses with a BSN degree from another university may be deficient in the clinical hours necessary to receive a PHN Certificate. These students will need to take BSN 423 Community-based Role Performance which includes 90 hours of clinical. This course will be taken through Open University via the Extended Education Department. For PHN Open U Students, BSN 423 will be available in Fall and Spring semesters only.

Public Health Nurses Core Competencies
According to the 2018 Quad Council Coalition Competency Review Task Force report Community/Public Health Nursing Competencies, there are three tiers of competencies for public health nurses:
