Public Health Nurse Licensure And Certification
How to become a public health nurse? First, you must become a registered nurse by graduating from an accredited nursing school and passing the NCLEX-RN examination. While not legally required, certification demonstrates your knowledge of and commitment to public health, and many employers strongly prefer or require it.
RN Licensure: The NCLEX-RN examination is a multiple choice examination. To be eligible for the examination, you must graduate from an accredited nursing school and apply through your local state board of nursing. The fee for the examination is $200 and there may be other fees to apply for a license, based on your state.
Certified in Public Health : The National Board of Public Health Examiners offers the CPH credential. To be eligible for the examination, you must either have a bachelors degree and five years of experience in public health or have graduated from an accredited masters or doctoral public health program. The test, which can be taken with a live proctor or at a testing center, costs $385.

Attend An Accredited Nursing Program
Graduate with a BSN from an accredited nursing program. While you can become a nurse through either an ADN or BSN program, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree in order to earn your public health certification.
To get into a nursing program, you need to complete the required prerequisite health science courses such as anatomy and physiology, biology, nutrition, biomedical statistics, and chemistry. Requirements can vary by school however, some have a GPA requirement of 3.0 or higher for consideration.
You will also need to take and perform well on an entrance exam such as the Test of Academic Skills exam or Kaplan Nursing School Admissions test. Some universities also require letters of recommendation, CPR certification, a written career statement explaining why you want to go to nursing school, and a face-to-face interview.
